nice to know there are other greys in this world who
think the house is a racetrack ! ! ! rebel and chaz
will sometimes get what i call brain cramps and chase
each other around the house, on and off the furniture,
in and out of all the rooms (they can make a complete
circle of the house because of the layout although
sometimes will make a quick stop on one of the beds)
and they do this a full speed. i just flatten myself
against a wall and watch. when they are done, they sit
by the kitchen cabinet and wait for their yummies ! ! !

How can our group contact the Gilley girls for a possible presentation?
We'd like it if they could come to our first greyhound reunion-(hey, ya

Subject: CHAT: my new gal Hannah

Hi all-

As i wrote late last week, my new gal Hannah arrived home on
Saturday evening. I'm anxious to find out whatever I can about her and I'm
hoping someone on the list may be able to help. If you have one of her
siblings or can supply me with her dam & sire names I would appreciate it.
She's a wonderful, very red, gal with a black mask and a puff of
white on her nose. She has white toes and the tip of her tail is white. She
loves children, hasn't had an accident in the house, and is oh so calm.
She's very tall and lanky. She needs a few pounds to get to pet weight but I
think she will probably always be on the thin side because of her build. She
has drawn a lot of "oohs" and "ahhs" everywhere I've taken her the last two
days.
I picked Hannah up at the Baltimore airport on the 5th along with
two other hounds for our group. When she came out of the crate, I couldn't
believe how beautiful she was. I immediately wanted her but she was already
destined for another home. Well that home (along with a second prospective
home) fell thru and I wound up with her! Talk about fate!!
The two other hounds that flew into Baltimore with Hannah were also
gorgeous ( I fostered and did the adoption for one, Sharpspur), but there
was just something about Hannah. How lucky could I be!!!
All three of these great hounds came to our group from GPA/Orlando.
Our group gets hounds from GPA/Orlando fairly often and they are always
great hounds. I want to personally thank GPA/Orlando for sending us these
three great hounds..... especially since one of them is now romping in my
back yard with my other two hounds! Thanks Lisa....

Thanks in advance to anyone that can tell me anything about
Hannah. Here's her ear Tattoo #'s.

right ear - 97H

The local vets misdiagnosed a broken toe on one of my dogs and she got an
infection at that site. I asked them to x-ray it but they were SURE it
wasn't broken. They were wrong. <sigh>

Anyway we eventually had to see an orthopedist and one of the drugs of
choice for bone infections is cephalexin (Keflex) at a relatively high
dose for a full month, at least. My dogs tolerate Keflex well, but YMMV.

Subject: CHAT: Murder at Happy Hound Hollow

It's not so happy around Happy Hound Hollow these days....

We got 4 fuzzy yellow ducklings, just a couple days old, back in April.
They were growing nicely, and the dogs were interested but not allowed in
the same part of the yard, and I muzzled the dogs when they went out,
just in case. Spencer the field champion whippet would put his feet on
the side of the bathtub to watch them swim, but would get bored and
leave. I thought that was a pretty good sign. Early this past week,
however, they disappeared from the duck yard during the night. There was
no sign of an intruder - human or otherwise. No feathers left behind,
all the gates were closed.... no noise was heard and our open bedroom
window is about 20 feet from where they were. We figure they were
abducted by aliens <kidding>, because we would have heard if they were
being chased by someone or some critter because they make a lot of racket
when they're chased, and they're not nearly old enough to fly, they were
just starting to get their feathers. I looked for them all day, asked
all the neighbors if they'd seen them, but no luck. I cried.

<sigh>

So, Friday I went and got 5 more. Teeny tiny adorable little fluffballs.
Saturday morning my daughter (age 7) was taking them out of their box,
putting them in the kitchen sink to feed them. She reached down and
picked one up, stood up to put it in the sink, and Casper, one of our
greyhounds, snuck in behind her and quiety reached into the box and
picked one up and walked off with it. Oh my gosh, Kinsey screamed
"Casper took a duckling!" I could hear the poor little thing peeping,
and when I got Casper to drop it, it tumbled to the ground and collapsed.
I was hoping it would be okay, but it was bleeding pretty bad from one
little spot on it's belly. I went and put it back in the box, but within
just a few seconds, it was dead. It was all I could do to keep from
crying when I wrapped the poor little thing up in a couple paper towels.
I was on my out the door to a coursing trial, so I told Kinsey that maybe
her and Dad could bury the duckling in the shady flowerbed and plant the
impatiens she brought home from school for Mother's Day on the grave.
When I got home from the trial and was later working in the garden, I saw
her 2 times kneeling and praying by the duckling's grave. Dad said she
wanted to buy a small plastic cross to put on the grave.

<sigh>

Casper's murder trial is set for June 4. He has pled guilty, so the
trial is just a formality.

Subject: MEDICAL, HELP: Semi-Paralized gh needs advice/assistance

One of our most appreciated local owners has had a tragic accident and
could=
use the knowledgable assistance of you list subscribers.

When Sharon and Brad sent 10 year old "Kellen" out for his
before-bedtime-p=
ee, Kellen raced around the yard. So happy and excited was he that he=
missed the door on the way into the house and hit the door frame (and his=
Mother's knee at the same time). Kellen, an 85 pound blond boy (twice=
returned before his permanent homing) was concussed and unconscious.=20

Neighbors helped Brad and Sharon lift Kellen onto a bed and transport him
to=
their vehicle so he could be seen by the emergency vet at midnight. Since=
then, x-rays and mylograms were taken- Kellen evidently has a "compression
=
fracture".

Kellen has no reaction in his back legs or feet which seem cold to the=
touch. His front legs seem warm and function a little, but not enough to=
help him crawl. Attending vet seems to think that function might return=
with pysical therapy.... Big boy that he is, and with the new knee injury=
accompanying his Mother's long-term back problem, it is impossible for=
Kellen's parents to transport him to their print shop where he is=
accustomed to spending his days. =20

Kellen is eating well, drinking well, and is verbally demanding of his=
parents (I listened to him begging for attention in tonight's phone=
conversation). The original treating veterinarion seems to think that
many=
functions MIGHT return..... In running a small business in Eureka, CA,=
however, neiher Brad or Sharon can afford the time to stay home with
Kellen=
in hopes of his eventual recovery. I would consider bringing Kellen
here=
if we didn't have 7 dogs in residence and be concerned bout pack behavior=
with a "downed dog" who made so many verbal demands... =20

I have advised Brad and Sharon (after considering the diagnosis/tentative=
prognosis of their regular vet) to enlist the services of Sarah Green, DVM=
who is our local visiting vet with expertise in homeopathy and alternative=
meds. Other than that, I have no suggestions on how to provide help or=
information about possible recovery. This is why I'm hoping all of you=
with so much group experience might share with this family.

If any of you have been involved in a similar senario, we'd all appreciate=
your input and experienced advice.

=46YI, The Ericksons were devestated when they lost their original
greyound,=
"Aiko" (see In Tribute on our website) in 1998. Only months later, they=
accepted into their home, two greyhounds who had lived together for
several=
years and were being returned by a local adopter. One of them, "Cedar",=
went to the Bridge last Thanksgiving due to Osteosarcoma. Only Kellen=
remains. =20

Kellen now needs your help as much as his parents need your compassion and
a=
dvice.

Thanks, Friends, for reading this far. Please contact Sharon directly at:

Subject: Chat;Special;Medical- Chicken necks

We need some help from the "raw feeders" on the list. We are currently
switching our two greys 1- 11Y/O male & 1- 5Y/O female to a raw diet. They
are taking to the raw food like "ducks to water". Our problem lies with our
male who tends to give a couple of chews to the chicken necks and then
swallows like an alligator. This has led to a couple of "urka-gurka"
incidents with some undigested bone in with the bile being ejected. So , my
question is, how can I get him so chew the necks more to reduce the size of
the bone pieces for easier digestion?

John & Martha Ward
Epigee - Just give me more necks, you can clean it up later.
Perci - I chew everything at least 32 times before swallowing.

Subject: CHAT: Hall of Fame (and, has my hubby gone mad?)

Ok, I have to admit, I'm a greyhound geneaology geek. Love looking up my
kids' racing records, love looking up their lineage, just love it! :) I've
discovered all of my pups but one have one Hall of Famer in common and
that's Tell You Why. That must have been one busy pup!

I have some sad news though--I can't find any info about my poor Sportman.
I've been using the greyhound breed and race database for most of my info
(www.greyhound-data.com) but unfortunately, I can't find anything about my
Sporty boy (Shata Sport) except for his sire and dam. So I'm wondering if
anyone has heard of either of these two dogs: Sports Power and Shata TU
Silky. If you have any info regarding their lineage I'd appreciate
it--maybe I can find at least one Hall of Famer in his background so he
won't feel left out ;).

On a related note, hubby and I were discussing a possible vacation for the
fall and we've been batting around a few different cities. Saturday we were
out driving and he asks me if I'd like to go to Kansas City and at first I'm
like, um, ok, we were trying to decide among NYC, Chicago, New Orleans, and
now you throw Kansas City at me? uh huh. But then he said do you know
what's in driving distance of Kansas City? Well, hello---Abilene, KS of
course--home of the Greyhound Hall of Fame. SO it looks like I may be
making a trip out to Greyhound Mecca a little bit later in the year.
Anybody know if there are any other interesting greyhound-related things in
the area--maybe any special events/gatherings? Also, anyone actually been
to the Hall?

Thanks in advance for any info!

:) Melissa & Co
