WOOHOO! Let's continue the adoption winning streak for seniors and
special needs!

I wanted to say a big thank you to all who are adopting seniors! Seniors
and special needs just really hit my heart strings everytime. My scarf
donation orders are going through the roof! Congrats goes to everyone -
the groups, the foster parents and to the adopters who open their hearts
to such WONDERFUL sweet endearing companion greys!

Now - remember the vendors who donate to the * adopt a senior* month with
your private purchases as well. Some of these donations probably would
not happen as often without the support of private purchases and
donations behind the scenes. I donate senior/special needs scarves with
the help from private purchases. Without those private purchases, I
wouldn't be able to donate as many scarves as I am now! The proceeds
that I get from private purchases goes right back into supplies to make
more scarves to donate to seniors and special needs greys! I don't make
a penny (even though I wish I could).

CONGRATS once again to all of those who are now proud new parents of a
bouncing (ok maybe not quite bouncing - how about loving) senior and/or
special needs greyhound!

G.entle H.ugs,
Therese Skinner

Subject: chat: greyhounds & whippets

Hello all,

Three greyhounds, 4 whippets, one golden retriever, one labrador retriever,
and next week an additional golden retriever and a border collie .... all
live here ....

My comments on the above crowd ....

the greyhounds are the quietest, the most reserved, the most stately and the
most concerned with maintaining the appearance of dignity.

The whippets are similiar, but with more of a joking, rolicking sense of
humor ... more of a bouncey nature, more of a propensity to cuddle, and more
.... lots more .... energy.

The retrievers (golden or otherwise) are unconcerned with dignity of any
sort .... they are happy, and they make sure everyone knows it .... and they
take it upon themselves to make sure that all in their presense are happy
too, seeing it as a personal failure if one remains glued to the computer
screen instead of tossing a tennis ball, when they are around. Retrievers,
at least those here, have a great sense of fun .....

and the border collie .... well, she is a special case. Not the wild and
continual motion sort of exercise that border collies are famous for ....
this one likes to cuddle ... she likes to have her tummy rubbed, and she
likes that finally .... after more than 5 years of a life where everyone
abandoned her in turn when it appeared that she "didn't want to listen" to
commands .... well, I think that finally she is just appreciative of someone
who accepts her for who she is ..... and understands that she "listens" as
best she can ... if in a slightly different way. Jewel is deaf.

For anyone who is considering adding a whippet to the greyhound mix, I would
say to go for it ... whippets are a little walking, running,
cuddling........ entertainment package .... and they are very close to my
favorite breed.

my two cents .....

Subject: SPECIAL: Wondering Andy..........and the Chickens

A few people have emailed me about contacting an animal communicator to see
if Andy could be approached in this novel way. I did talk to our local
person who said she did connect with Andy. She reports that Andy is staying
out of sight of people, is alive and is killing chickens for his food. This
reminds me of a lost dog many years ago who survived with a muzzle on by
straining what she caught through the muzzle. Resourceful. The main
problem
for Andy if he is surviving on chickens is the chance of getting shot by an
irate farmer. The communicator suggested that if he was going to continue
in
this hunt that he vary his targets. She said he appeared to be very keen
and
intelligent.
It will be interesting to see if the searchers Sherry Cottner is working
with
run into any chicken farmers who are less than thrilled to have a hungry
greyhound in their neighborhood.

Cindy said:"What is most important in picking any shampoo for dogs or for
people is to
choose a product that does NOT contain sodium laurel sulfate or sodium
laureth sulfate
(the chemicals that make product lather".

Cindy I have been using Pantene for years on my greys and my brother uses
it on his greys.
No sodium laurel sulfate but there is ammonium laureth sulfate and ammonium
lauryl sulfate.
Is this a problem?

Thank you,

Subject: Chat: Saluki/Border Collie Mix needs home

Sunny is a 1 year old Saluki/Border Collie Mix. She is in BC rescue,
but looks more sighthound. They have had her for a while and she is
just not peaking the interest of BC adopters.

Sunny is a slender, athletic young Border Collie cross. She is a
beautiful jumper, probably because of her long body and long legs. She
has the sweet non-aggressive personality. She loves to leap in the air
for a Frisbee or a tennis ball and she can get a lot entertainment out
of a stick or a toy. She loves to romp with other pups her age and
she's strong enough that she doesn't get hurt by rough and tumble
playing.

To adopt Sunny you can fill out an application at www.cbcr.org

I have uploaded pictures of Sunny at:

Subject: Chat: Birthday wishes

Hi,
Tomorrow (Thursday) is my girl, Polka's, ninth birthday. She is a youngster
compared to Suzi Waddell, but each birthday makes me more aware of how much
I
love this sweetest girlie in the world and how much I need her in my life.

Polka is my heart dog. Though I love Dancer and my golden, Nikki, dearly,
Polka and I have a special bond. A couple of years ago when I spent 6 weeks
in the hospital, my family was permitted to bring Polka to see me around
week
five, when I was very depressed about the length of the stay. I think she
saved my sanity with that visit and we have been even more strongly bonded
ever since.

May we have many more years together, my pretty girl!

We actually use Four Paws cat and kitten shampoo. It is no more tears and
has lanolin in it. It does a really good job on both the greys and the
cats.

Subject: CHAT: Shampoo urban legend

This is a pretty old urban legend:
http://www.scambusters.org/otherhoaxes4.html#shampoo

Below are reports from the American Cancer Society's web page in
addition to the snopes site.
--------------------------------
http://www.snopes2.com/toxins/shampoo.htm
Claim: Sodium lauryl sulfate, a substance commonly found in shampoo
and toothpaste, poses a significant cancer risk to users of those
products.

Status: False.

Synopsis: Yes, sodium lauryl sulfate is a cleansing agent used in
many shampoos and toothpastes. No, it doesn't pose a greater risk of
cancer to consumers than thousands of other substances used in a
variety of other everyday products.

Origins: Yet another product scare in the form of an
endlessly-forwarded anonymous e-mail message hit the Internet in
mid-1998:
---------------------------------
http://www2.cancer.org/zine/index.cfm?fn=004_09231998_1
<snip>There is no way of knowing where this Internet information
comes from. However, there are a variety of websites offering health
and beauty products that are SLS-free. According to David Emery and
his Urban Legends website, "Interestingly, all these Websites are
maintained by 'independent distributors' for various multi-level
marketing companies hawking natural personal care products. As a
matter of fact, the majority of URLs returned in a standard Web
search on the keywords 'sodium laureth sulfate' all point to versions
of the same propaganda."

It is best to be cautious when obtaining information, especially
health-related information, from the Web. Check to see who owns the
site, make sure reliable sources are used and if ever in doubt, check
it out.
-----------------------
http://www2.cancer.org/zine/index.cfm?fn=004_09231998_0
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Contrary to popular rumors on the Internet, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
(SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) do not cause cancer. Both are
common ingredients, which create foam and bubbles, and are found in
most shampoos, cosmetic cleaners, bath and shower gels, bubble baths,
tooth pastes and mouth rinses. Both compounds are cosmetic
detergents, which exert emulsifying action, thereby removing oil and
soil from the hair and skin.<snip>
-----------------------
http://www.drweil.com/archiveqa/0,2283,1499,00.html
(Published 3/31/99) I've been getting a lot of questions about sodium
lauryl sulfate (SLS, also known as "sodium laurel sulfate" or "sodium
laureth sulfate") and, frankly, I'm at a loss to know where this
concern comes from. SLS is a detergent, and while it's true that
strong concentrations are used for heavy-duty cleaning, that doesn't
mean the much lower amounts found in shampoo are unsafe. In trying to
track down the source of concern about SLS, I found repeated
instances of unsubstantiated, alarmist claims coming mostly from the
purveyors of natural shampoos.

It is irresponsible to brand anything a carcinogen without providing
the source of information. If SLS is carcinogenic, there should be
hard evidence somewhere, but a search of the medical literature
failed to turn up any reports of adverse effects from SLS. I did find
that, like soap, it can sting if it gets into your eyes and that, at
higher concentrations than you'll find in any shampoo, SLS can
irritate the skin. <snip>
