Subject: chat/special: Shay is found!
A week ago, I sent out a plea for anyone who could help us with the search
for Shay, who got loose a week ago. After the hard work and diligence of
some very extraordinary people, we are happy to report that Shay was found
safe and sound lying under bushes along side the railroad tracks she used to
cover a wide area.
REGAP wanted to thank the one greyhound organization that pulled through for
us and work as hard at helping the frantic owner as they would have one of
their own families, and that's Greyhound Angels based out of Dearborn,
Michigan. Thank you sooooo much! And a special thanks to Lee Warden for
cross posting which provided us a great volunteer from the Italian Greyhound
rescue league.
A very happy ending, and a renewed faith in the human race (heck, even
Detroit gangs refused our reward money and expressed a sincere concern to
help find this little girl!)

For those of you who were kind enough to share your knowledge and
experiences with GME, I would like to update you on the condition of
Merry.
Ten days ago we were sure we were going to lose her. She was paralyzed,
not eating and fading away before our eyes. Her owners were devastated
and ready to end her suffering.
Their vet asked them to wait just another day or two until the last of
the culture results were in.
Two things occurred within a 24 hour period. Her vet was calling a vet
friend of his at the University of Florida and dialed the wrong number.
While explaining the issue to the vet who answered the phone, he was told
he was speaking to a neurologist who was writing a paper on GME and had
treated 27 dogs with a 66% cure rate. Her treatment consists of high
doses of prednisone and a cancer drug (not radiation). It is
approximately a 12 week course of treatment and results can be seen by
the end of the first week.
After much conversation it was decided to start Merry on this treatment.
While waiting for the drug to be shipped to the local vet, Merry stood on
her own that night.
She also decided she needed to eat and drink. She had been on pred for
about three days at that point. This was on Monday night. Tuesday she
came home with prednisone in hand and no pain medication.
Now, a week later, she is up and about slowly regaining her strength.
Her activity level is not back to normal but she is wagging her tail,
eating well, going outside on her own and mentally alert.
As there was never an indication that this could have been anything else,
we are assuming she did have GME. And as we never expected her to be
alive today we are in awe of her recovery.
Each day gives us hope for her future and a chance to thank everyone who
has kept her in their thoughts.
If anyone out there would like to get in touch with the neurologist at
the University of Florida for more information, please contact me and I
will pass the information along.
Thank you all for giving us the information we needed to help fight for
this special little girl.

Well, this is the first time I've posted--I've only been had my greyhound
for two weeks now and I can't believe that life went on before he got here.
My boyfriend--he lives with me--seemed only mildly enthusiastic about the
prospect of adopting a greyhound. Everything changed, though, from the
moment Phantom walked in the door and immediately kissed Rick on the mouth .
. . then licked his toes.
Not only has Rick built our beloved Phantom a web site
http://www.rickboots.com
but when he and the dog are in the other room, it almost sounds like I'm
being cheated on: "I love you so much," he coos to Phantom. Then, "should I
wear the red hat or the blue one?" This murmured in the same baby-talk,
lovey-dovey tone.
Before I brought Phantom home, Rick was adamant that the dog would not sleep
in our room, "I'm not sleeping in the same room with a dog."
A few nights later I awakened to Rick helping the dog get in bed with
us--yes, not just into the same room, into the same bed.
Life couldn't be better.
