Subject: Rescue Group Support Needed

We rarely post but wanted to make those of you involved in rescue aware
of a situation that we're very concerned about. We are the devoted
owners of both Greyhounds and Basset Hounds and volunteer for Tri-State
Basset Hound Rescue as well as Greyhound Friends of New Jersey. We were
very upset to learn that Lone Star Basset Rescue in Texas is holding a
Basset Race as a fundraiser at an active Greyhound track, Gulf Greyhound
Park near Houston, on the Memorial Day weekend. We've spoken to those
in charge of the rescue group about greyhound rescue and concerns about
a rescue group undermining the efforts of other rescue groups and they
are not willing to move or cancel the event. If anyone would like to
add their concerns to ours, especially Greyhound Rescue groups in Texas,
Lone Star can be reached at 281-579-7424, or you can email at
kndglass@swbell.net . Their website is www.lonestarbassethound.com .
Please feel free to contact us off list if you'd like additional
information or have any questions. Thank you for your support.

Subject: MEDICAL, CHAT: Idol can't get a break.

Well, let's see. I brought my brand-spanking-new dog home this past
Saturday,
May 12. Today is May 17. He is already at the vet's!

I posted about Idol right after getting him and mentioned that he had a
funky
toenail. Then I noticed a couple more of them on the same foot were kind of
odd too.

Last night one of them literally crumbled off. Exposing the quick. Blood
everywhere, and poor doggie with a very sore toe. So today we go to the vet,
who tries to soak the foot and remove the remainder of the nail, which she
says looks infected. No go - the nail stub is still firmly attached. I must
admire their persistence. The nail was soaked for 20 minutes. I doubt I
could
get him to hold still for me for 20 seconds.

So he gets to go back tomorrow and have the rest of the nail stripped under
sedation, a mere 11 days after being anesthetized for his neutering and
dental. A culture will be taken to see if he's got a fungus infection. He'll
be on antibiotics and a fish oil supplement in the meantime to see if it
helps
at all. For the coming weeks we are looking forward to repeated vet visits,
bandages, baggie-foot and all sorts of pleasures I certainly had hoped to
wait
to enjoy after he'd at least had a chance to settle in. He may well start to
think that being a pet sucks because we have to do all this stuff to him
that
he's not real fond of. I just hope he isn't a bandage-eater ...

And I might as well just tell my employer to send my paycheck directly to
the
vet. Bah.

Brittany also wants an answer to that question. When I first decided to
start looking for a senior hound back in February the plan, I told Kate
Bressler, was to take my time and find the right dog and adopt it in May in
honor of Adopt A Senior Hound Month. I figured that with my long list of
requirements (old, cat safe, good with kids, good with other dogs, been in
a foster home, and white and brindle in color) that it would take that long
to find the perfect senior. Not. Along came Kelly Graham and her foster
dog Brittany. Who met and exceeded all of my requirements. I even whent
so far as to discuss with Kelly waiting until May, after I returned from
Kanab, to adopt her. But I decided not to wait.

And even though she doesn't get all of the promotionals for adopt in May,
she received several beautiful gifts from donors who donate all year long.
And I received 3 extra months of love and affection. And lets face it in
the life of an 11yr old greyhound, 3 months of time has no price tag.

In 3 months Brittany has learned to romp vigourously around the back yard
with the other dogs, she has learned how to steal all the best beds in the
house, she got to learn that Granpa from North Carolina (who just came for
a visit) is one of the nicest hoomans she will ever meet, she got to take
the adventure of a lifetime with the Awesome Auction Broads to Kanab,
visiting along the way Mesa Verde, Bryce Canyon, The Greyhound Hall of
Fame, and other great places. In 3 months she has gotten to dig 3 months
more of holes in the backyard then she would have otherwise, she has gone
for 3 months worth of car rides, and she has had 3 more months with me as
her mommy.

So though I encourage everyone to consider adopting a senior hound during
the month of May to take advantage of all the goodies offered to you, dogs
like Brittany and Charming are the lucky ones who got what money couldn't
buy and no one could give them but us, forever homes! May is a reminder to
us that there are these senior dogs out there who need homes, but they
don't disappear when May is gone, they need homes all year round!

Jordan, give Charming a hug for me she is a lucky girl. Tell her its not
nice to be a "material girl"<G> but if she can get away with it, Brittany
wants to know about it<BEG>!

Happy Old Hound Month,

Sue & Brittany (11), Niki (11), and Whisper (4)

We have a dog ("Whimsy") that is being returned to us from a couple that is
moving from Virginia to California. The wife is in the military and is
being
transferred and they are unable to find housing where they are going that
will take a large dog.
They will be in Nashville on June 6th. That is as far north as they will
be.
Is there anyone out there that may be taking a trip up towards Chicago area
and may be able to provide a ride or place to stay for a few days?
Please contact me if you are able to help.
Many thanks,

Hi everyone,

I have to brag a little. On Sunday May 20th my big girl named Blue Girl will
be 11 years old. She and Paddy were whelped just 19 days apart. So now we
have two 11 year olds at the Dorn house.
Blue is such a sweet, kissy girl and I am so blessed that someone gave her
back cause they couldn't keep her.
We will be in St Louis this weekend so will celebrate next week. I am taking
all 3 to the St Louis gathering so they can see the Gilley girls while we
are there visiting friends.

Hugs,

Gloria Dorn in La Porte, IN with Paddy, Blue and Freddie

Subject: MEDICAL: Regulating Bady Heat Trouble

I need some advice with my Glenna.

I am not sure of her exact age, but I am giving her June 8th as her
birthday.....she will be 13 in a few weeks.

I noticed something strange today, and am now worried.
She is having trouble regulating her body temps.

This AM she was shivering. I turned on the heat. Minutes later, she was
panting, I turned off the heat, and opened windows. Half hour later, the
windows are shut, and she is shivering under a blanket again.
Not an hour later, she is panting so hard, I turn the air on......

Whats going on here? How worried do I need to be?

Thanks

Subject: CHAT: an update on Shannon the big Irish boy

I just wanted to let everyone on the list know how well Shannon is =
doing. He has been in my home as a foster since 4/29/01. He currently =
shares his home with two adults, one 10 year old girl, two male =
greyhounds, one female greyhound and one male mixed breed dog (about 25 =
lbs.) To date we have had no problems with aggression from Shannon =
towards any of the other dogs or vise-versa. We are cautious and do not =
leave Shannon and mixed breed dog alone in the house together.=20

We are fortunate to have a small fenced in yard so we do not need to =
walk him on a leash for bathroom visits. Although, we have taken him on =
a few walks around the neighborhood and on a visit to the pet supply =
store. All went well.=20

So far he has been a very easy foster dog to care for, he is completely =
housebroken and will ask to go out when necessary. He is clean and very =
friendly.

There was prospective adopter interested in him but she had a cat an =
unfortunately, he is not cat safe. He was cat tested last Friday and =
failed!=20
=20
Shannon appears to be happy and content!

Subject: RESOURCES: Adopt-a-Senior-Greyhound Month benefit auctions

Hey, everybody

Just a quick note to update you on the progress of the AAB auction for
Golden Years Greyhound Referral ... tonight we added a bonus.

Golden Greyhound Grab-bag #1
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1238088358

The bonus is a Sarah Snavely pin which reads "Love a Senior Greyhound" ...
it's spectacular. I read on Sarah's Ebay listing that she is going to
discontinue making these pins, her picture frames and Christmas ornaments
... so this is an item that may never be repeated.

We also added a second auction. The proceeds of this one will be going to
Greyhounds Unlimited of Texas. GU is dear to our hearts since one of us
(Sue) adopted her Whisper from them. Whisper was in sad shape when she was
rescued during a drug raid a couple syears ago - but she's doing great now.

Golden Greyhound Grab-bag #2
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1238929104

If you have not allowed a senior greyhound into your life, you are missing
one of the most joyful things on this planet. Seniors possess unequalled
grace and gentleness that cannot be found with other ages.

Bid high / Bid often!

Hug those Hounds!

Well, as they get older they have trouble regulating body temp. I kept
sweaters on my senior kids in the winter and kept them air conditioned in
the summer. Now that all my dogs are under 6 years old I am not nearly so
careful about the house temperature.

Subject: HELP: Need home visit in Terre Haute, IN

Hi, all! I have a potential home for a senior Greyhound in Terre Haute,
IN. I can peruse the application and call the references, but I'd really
like someone to meet the family and check all the usual 'home visit'
things, e.g., fencing, other pets, children, etc.

I'd like to wrap this up in May so they can take part in the Senior Gifts
program, a part of Adopt-A-Senior month. Assuming they're approved, of
course. I've asked them when we can catch the whole family at home, and
it's sounding like this Sunday, or Saturday or Sunday next weekend.

Please let me know if you'd be willing to help with a home visit. Thank
you! Private replies appreciated.
