Hi,
First let me introduce myself! My name is Kevin, and I am proud to announce
that I am a new Daddy to ROCKY!!! (Rock of Ages). He is a 3 year old Fawn
Brindle from Connecticut and is now a proud member of our family. We (my
wife, Donna and I), "adopted" him yesterday. Through the help of Barbara
Wicklund, we were brought together. Rocky is our 1st Grey and he has already
found his way into our home and heart. We live in southern New Jersey by
Philadelphia. Hope to see some of you at upcoming Grey events!

Getting to be that time of year, has anyone had GOOD
experiences with greyhounds and water? I've got a pup
and wondered if I should introduce him early to water
or not even bother.

Subject: Sir Cedric, aka Kelso's Sidekick, June 5, 1989 - May 18, 2001
For those who do not know.. my darling Sir Cedric will be flying to the
Rainbow Bridge early this evening. My wonderful vet, Dr. Liz Hassinger, is
coming to my house to help him on his journey. He has been doing the stoice
greyhound thing and suffering from vague symptoms for the past month... but
has come up with cancer .. a tumor deep in the shoulder.. which has somehow
reached a stage where it is destroying him. He is resting in moderate
comfort with a fentanil patch on now... but is most certainly ready to join
some friends waiting for him at the Bridge.
This is particularly hard for us coming simultaneously with my husband's
cancer diagnosis... it seems much too sudden and too sad. Cedric came into
my home in December of 1987... he had been returned to the adoption kennel
at
Lincoln along with 3 other greyhounds, by an owner I would characterize as
substandard.. for 3 years Cedric -- a well loved champion -- had spent most
of his time tied to a doghouse out in the New England winters... this did
not help his arthritis or his over all condition.
But my gentle giant -- Cedric is 90# and 31.5" -- came into my home with a
magical love and nobility. Just being around him made all people smile...
walking him was to be transported to a magical space where I was the lady of
the lake and he was my noble hound -- the quality of his spirit was
outstanding. I love my Harley very much -- Harley is my little comic, my
heart dog.. but Cedric-- Cedric has my very soul all intertwined with his.
Please join with me in wishing him safe journey and no fear..... thank you..
luv, Sage

OK, these are not my greyhounds, but they are greyhounds that need some help
finding good homes.
CDog, non-cat-safe black female 3 yrs old (The racing owner has paid her
$90/month board bill since October, but so fare no adoption group has taken
her. There's nothing wrong with her except that she's black and doesn't like
cats. The next time some anti racing person tries to tell you that we
racing types only care about the money and don't care about the greyhounds,
or that we "discard them" when they no longer "make a profit", just think
about this racing owner's $720.)
Also available are:
Owners are also paying for these dogs board bills:
Jumper, cat-safe fawn male 3 yrs old
Dan, cat-safe black male 3.5 years old
Surfrider, cat-safe black male 3 yrs old
Blue, black male 2.5 years old (cat status unknown)
If you can help get these five fine greyhounds home please email me
privately. They are not my racers, but they are good dogs that need a home.

I'd been hearing greyt things about the Aromaleigh line of shampoos, so I
finally ordered some... WOW! I'm very impressed. I bathed all four of
the ghs--and they all looked like they were ready for their first day of
Kindergarten. :) Shiny & the smelled great too! (I don't like the
perfumey dog shampoos).
I also ordered the Flea Spritz-- and while I don't know if it keeps the
fleas away (never had a flea problem...knock on wood) it has kept away those
nasty biting black flies.
Aromaleigh products are 100% natural (with no sodium laurel sulfate). AND
if you go to the GPA-Minnnesota website and click on the Aromaleigh link...
GPA-Mn gets a bit of a donation too! :)
Thanks much,

I use a big (12"? diameter) stainless steel bowl for water and don't fill it
full. So, the face is down in there a bit, not up, slurping out over the
edges. (A deeper one might be even better). Also, I've got a throw rug under
the stand (bowl is on a plant stand), and I gave up and put a large throw
rug down on the area just near the bowl. Rugs are the only way I've figured
to deal with this.
Re: the wall and trash can: repositioning the bowl might help this.

Thought I'd share a little story. My husband and I had a
very tall bed. It was a 4 poster with a thick mattress and box spring. We
didn't realize it would be so tall when we got all this stuff, but it
ended up so high I had to "jump" into bed night! This situation made it so
that Oscar, our caninie son, slept on the floor, far below in the valley.
Well, the bed got too much for me and we took it apart and got a very
"short" simple frame. Oscar appreciated the guesture because this morning I
woke up with a big drooly tounge washing my face. Slobbering all over. The
cats got into the action, and before I knew it I had three tounges working
me over- party in love, but I am sure they also realized it would get me out
of bed to fill the food bowls! My husband (an anti-alam-snoozer) chanted in
the background "Get her boys! Lick that Mommy good! Maybe we'll be on time
for work today!" Each day is a new suprise and a new bodily fluid...

Alexis

Oscar- Get up mom! Maybe if I stop licking her face and move to her
toes... Looks like the cat has got that covered!

From vmyths.com -
It takes guts to say 'Jesus' virus
A typical alert which devolved from the original Good Times hoax virus alert
(see related link). This one claims your computer will die if you read an
email with "It takes guts to say 'Jesus' " in the subject line. Naturally,
the alert claims no antivirus software can protect you from this anti-Christ
email.
A hoaxster probably launched this alert to curtail a popular chain letter
with the same subject line (see related link). Some people think an atheist
did it out of spite -- but Vmyths.com believes the culprit is more probably
a
lax Christian who grew tired of receiving copies of the chain letter.
This alert is currently making the rounds in yet another life-cycle.
Antivirus experts won't admit it openly, but they quietly say the hoax has
been "resurrected" for its second coming.

Subject: Special: One little Mama will be left behind,or?????
Please- you wonderful l-list people who are committed getting the broods
out
of Ocala, I have one little Mama who will stay behind if nobody is able to
take her in.
I work with 4 farms in Ocala and knew about two old brood mamas for the last
3 months. I tried and tried and finally found a group in NJ (wonderful
HOUNDHAVEN) who has an application from a lady for an older brood, who is
catsave. We tested the two potential and both shyed away from the cat and
run
into the opposite direction-Now the potential adopter will make her choice
and then the other little Mama has to stay behind-if not a miracle happens
and she can get a ride as well on the "Oldtimer Express" from Ocala up north
on Memorial Day.
People who met me in Dewey might remember the two old Mamas I had with
me-Valentine (the dark dark brindle girl with the white face) and Secret
(the
fawn colored sweetheart). Well- it is Dewey all over again-both girls look
like Valley and Secrte-
Backhoe; is a dark dark brindle girl with a white face, catsave, very
outgoing, happy and sweet, born in Feb. 1992, over 70 Lbs.
M's Blue Lass: born in April 1992, shy at first, takes 5-10 minutes to warm
up to you, catsave, quiet and sweet, red fawn like Secret.
Please-if any of you can squeeze one more Mama in, let me know!

Subject: CHAT,SPECIAL: letter campaign to effect change for Spanish
greyhounds
[With the list owners' permission, what follows is a message from Anne
Finch, of Greyhounds In Need, England. You may have read this before, but
it's information that can't be repeated enough, as the more of us who do
this, the more chance that change can actually be brought about.]
++++++++++++++++++++
Dear fellow greyhound lovers,
There is a simple thing which you could do to help possibly effect a change
in Spain. What follows is a model letter, which you can use or adapt for
yourselves, calling for action concerning the law in Spain. Address it
please to:
El Ministro de Agricultura, c/o ANDA (G.I.N.), calle Tudescos 4 – 4*, 28004
Madrid, Spain, with a copy to your own Spanish Ambassador in Washington.
(We have an arrangement with ANDA, Spain’s Animal Welfare representative in
the European Parliament, to collate your letters and present them to the
right person.)
Please send a copy also to:
Bartolomé Ramírez Castro, Presidente del Club Nacional del Galgo Español,
Alta-5, 14640-Villa del Río, Córdoba, Spain, who wants to make his own
representation on behalf of The Club to the Royal House and to the
Authorities. (A copy of these letters [I've deleted the Spanish one here
due to space] can be found on our website
http://www.greyhoundrescue.co.uk.)------------
====================================================
Dear Minister,
I write as a supporter of the UK Charity, “Greyhounds in Need”, whose
founder, Anne Finch, in 1991, first made moves to investigate, defend and
rescue the unfortunate greyhounds of Spain. We read in her latest bulletin,
numerous letters from animal welfare volunteers in Cáceres, Granada,
Badajoz, Madrid, Córdoba, Segovia etc. who co-operate with GIN, of the
problems these valiant volunteers, many of them young, face in their daily
work for the animals of your land. We read of their struggles in the face
of prejudice, apathy, lack of finance, poor law enforcement, widespread
abandonment of animals and inadequate buildings for their shelters. We
sympathise with their struggle against traditions which promote the
gratuitous mistreatment of animals. We cry with sorrow, rage and
helplessness when we hear of the hangings and brutal killings of the galgos
at this time of the year when the hunting season has ended in Spain.
We support their calls for an Animal Protection Law to be applied
nationally, to establish breeding controls, compulsory identification of
pets, sporting and hunting dogs, and improved resources with which to
promote responsible dog ownership, handling, training and veterinary care.
Such a Law is needed urgently not only because of the lack of modern
consistent legislation but because of the complete absence of such
regulations in certain Autonomies.
As foreigners and Nationals we feel great concern on seeing this situation
in Spain. Spain is rightly proud of its history and Iberian traditions, but
it is the fast, profound transformations of the last decades which have
lifted Spain up to occupy an outstanding frontline position in the European
Union and the concert of Nations. These cannot be complete while Spain does
not recognise the necessity for a charitable attitude and respect towards
animals and their right to live without pain and unnecessary suffering.
Gandhi said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged
by the way its animals are treated”. All of us can learn something from
this.
I would like to know what steps the Ministry will take to improve the lot of
animals, especially of the galgos, in Spain. I would be grateful iif you
would send your reply to - Mrs. Anne Finch, Greyhounds in Need, 5 Greenways
Egham, Surrey TW20 9PA, UK, who will inform us.
Yours sincerely,
