Subject: Chat/Medical: Losing Dogs While Under

We are very interested in hearing from various adoption groups as to their
experience of losing dogs under anesthesia.

We have rescued close to 700 in the last 6 years, and today, we just lost
our 8th greyhound while they were under.

Pre-blood work is done by all our vets, and we do verify that they are using
proper anesthesia and dosages. All 8 were lost at different vets (no one
vet is showing a trend).

We need to know if this is statistically high as we are having a difficult
time identifying a trend or any medical mistakes during our investigation.
We are also curious to know if there is anything to be said about
pre-anesthesia sedatives that most of our vets (and many other vets) give
prior to anesthesia....is it necessary, and is there a cause and effect
possibility here? There is only one of 8 vets who has not lost a dog yet,
and they do not give the sedative before hand. Have no idea if there is
medical correlation to this.

HI:

AOLers: thanks for your patience while AOL decided all lsoft lists were not
actually spam.

I am working with Steve, GH-L web page master extraordinaire, to get the
digests from 5/15-5/20 posted to the web page.

When that happens I will let you know.

I just checked my AOL mail..... the last few posts were there!

Not quitting my roadrunner email just yet... <g>

Hopefully they'll work this out quickly, if it's not fixed already.

The other List members who have AOL probably already know this because they
got the same unfortunate answer I did when I called AOL. It will be several
days before the problem is fixed. But they did emphasize that it will be
fixed - I hope this happens sooner than later.

Subject: CHAT: What happened to HoundMountain.com?

Does anyone know what happened to the HoundMountain.com Website?

As a birthday present, my folks sent me a Gift Certificate to use there. I
visited the site about a month ago and saw that there was some mention that
the Website, while still working, was in the process of being "revamped".
I decided to wait awhile before placing an order..just in case additional
items were added to their product list.

Over the past 3 days, I've tried to access the site repeatedly with no luck,
as it's just coming up as a dead link.

Does anyone know what happened? Or whether or not the site is just down
temporarily? If it's been closed permanently, would anyone know who I
should contact about redeeming the gift certificate, or just to find out
what happened?

My folks just called me to asked me if I'd picked anything out yet. I just
said, "Not Yet", as I didn't have the heart to tell them that the site may
no longer exist. In addition to them feeling bad about the whole thing, as
if they made a poor decision on where to buy it, they would feel slightly
cheated, moreso since they are fairly strapped from a financial
perspective... (not to mention the fact that it would reinforce their fear
about this "strange, new, (and unsafe) world", which we call the Internet
:-).

Any information anyone may have on the subject would be greyt-ly
appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Subject: Chat, Help, Special: Track adoption kennels

I am not trying to start a debate, but I have a serious question regarding
the screening practices of Track adoption kennels.

The story...

I know with our adoption group we require 1.) Written application, 2.) phone
interview, 3.) Home visit. Once those steps have been completed then - and
only then - do we discuss individual dogs for adoption. We use only foster
homes, so we have a pretty good idea of what our Greys are like before we
place them in their permanent home.

I was contacted last week by a woman we had turned down for a greyhound. It
seems in light of that, she went to a dog track - 3 states away - and got
one on her own. I have no idea what kind of counseling she received, but
she gave us all the paperwork from the track and it appears she walked in
and left with the dog the same afternoon. Less than a week after getting
the dog, she was on the phone to me saying the dog had to go. It was after
7 in the evening and the dog had to be gone by the time she left for work
the next morning. We scrambled and took the dog that evening. She is now
in a foster home that is considering keeping her.

My question is - what type of screening occured? Can you go to a track and
walk out with a dog? Her husband - who did not want a greyhound - did not
sign the contact. Was that taken into consideration? Were references
checked? Also, how do they check on dogs that are placed so far away?

This is the second dog we have gotten under these circumstances - are we
alone? Do the Track adoption kennels have a follow-up procedure? Our
adoption group does - and yes it takes work, but it is important.

As I said, I am not trying to start a debate, but this situation really
concerns me. I know there is no way for anyone to know this person had been
turned down by our adoption group, but did they not see the same warning
signs we did? We never even sent an application to them, because of things
that were said on the initial phone conversation.

How many other dogs get dumped in this fashion?

Screening processes vary from group to group. Some track adoption kennels
are run by outside adoption groups. Some are entirely track sponsered.

Like all things in life, the quality greatly varies from track to track, as
is the case with private adoption groups.

It may help, in the case you describe to call that particular track adoption
group and politely and honestly tell them what happened. Perhaps they are
trying their best, but need some guidance.

Just recently a private rescue in our area, lost there first dog while under
a
two year old male. Not sure if they used pre-anethesis or not. My vet
REFUSES to
use it on sighthounds. I have four Italian greyhounds and each one of them
are
masked down on Isoflorane, thre is some struggling when they start going
under
but they don't have a problem. (Some Vets are just lazy and want to do it
the
easy way)
Last spring i had to take one of my IG's into the emergency vet's they
were
going to give her pre-sedatives. I told them ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! They were't
thrilled(They said they do it all the time on Greyhounds) but I told them,
do
it my way or don't do it at all. (She had gotten attack by my Greyhound
Mira, of
which she had to have 40 stictches in her neck area and to this day we don't
know why, Julie infact loves to give her a daily bath :<)
Because of there low body fat they absorb the stuff to fast into their
system, which could cause heart failure. Some theories is that
spay/neutering
/teeth cleaning are happening to fast after they come off the track and in
the
case of females on meds to prevent heat cycles they have to have time to
adjust
and possibly get their weight up. Also are some of these dogs bleeders? Are
Von
Willdebrand's Positive which are VERY high risk dogs for surgery.

I'm sorry people get offended by us AOL users. I hope I didn't bother
anyone
by asking if anyone else was having the same problems I was having.

I personally like AOL... never had a problem with it. I do have access to
other email (roadrunner as well as my army.mil account) but prefer AOL.

I guess it gets tiring always getting told how horrible AOL is and how I
should switch. I guess it's all a matter of preference. <sigh>

Hi, all. I like to do handwork like cross stitch, etc. I just did an

After five days of being Listless, I finally got my first Greyhound List in
five days. I was so excited. I don;'t know what the problem was or if it is
permanently solved but I called AOL numerous times, wrote to the technical
support dept. and peronally E-mailed the CEO, Steve Case. I also posted on
the AOL boards for everyone who was having a problem getting the List to
E-mail Mr. Case. I hope he was deluged with complaints, and perhaps that is
why we received the List today. I was truly going through withdrawl. It
seems it was a nationwide problem. So good to be back. I keep reading the
posts over and over, don't want to miss anything.
