Subject: chat: lurchers in Michigan

Kathy: I have no proof of this, but I've heard a rumor (more than once)
that someone up
here in MI is breeding greyhounds with various hunting dogs to use to hunt
coyotes and other game animals.

Lenka wrote: per the Michigan State Police Organized Crime Division 6 years
ago, they suspected illegal racing where money was exchanged using these
lurchers. They had several tips, but apparently they could not get concrete
evidence. Per the Genessee County Humane Society, there is at least one
gentleman who continually drops these lurchers off, but they will not
release his name to us. Genessee County is also where the majority of
lurchers were found running loose along side of highways, etc. We have
personally received phone calls from bystanders who saw these dogs being
trained by having them tied to a rope of some kind, running along side a
truck while the driver hung on to the rope. All we could do was take down
the area (Genessee County) and if they got the license plates, pass it on to
the Michigan State Police. This is all we know. We have now taken in our
22 lurcher, the last, like so many others, which came from the Genessee
Humane Society.

Finally, there was a published newspaper piece where one of the suspected
breeders alleged all his lurchers were stolen. There were over 10 or so
tied up outside. He accused greyhound rescue groups. When the police got
involved, he ironically had them all mysteriously returned. The police did
give out some info (I did not hear this directly from them) that he had
submitted an insurance claim for the dogs (they had some working value). So
rumor was he staged the whole thing. That's it....

Mary Ann,
One of the (many) wonderful traits of greyhounds is that they accept and
give love so readily -- as opposed to my Dobermans who bond so closely with
one human. If I were you I wouldn't worry about any emotional negative
experience for a dog that spends some intermediate time in a foster home.
Although it's often difficult for the foster parent, the dogs seems to
adjust beautifully.
Personally, I think there are a lot of advantages to going with an
adoption group. First, you get a chance to meet and make many friends who
share your love of the breed. Secondly they are a wonderful resource (and
generally more accessible than track adoption folks) for questions relating
to your dog and the breed in general.
I've done it both ways and have had two wonderful experiences. Next
time I'll do the adoption agency again because I like the people I deal with
and want to support them in anyway I can. In fact, when I retire in a few
years, I'm hoping to do some volunteer work with them. I think ALL
adoption groups are good. I suspect that tracks run the gamut so a lot may
depend on the track your dealing with.
In any event, good luck.

I guess that with the tailset a doberman cross is not technically a lurcher,
but I've seen several greyhound-doberman crosses in the last few years. I
thought of adopting one at some point (cross of two breeds I really like)
and spent some time trying to find one in a pound (unsuccessfully!), so
they're not *that* common.

I'm also involved with doberman rescue, and went out with a friend to check
out what was being called a "european bred doberman" who was up for
adoption, and the dog was almost certainly a grey or whippet cross with a
doberman. (I was almost buying the breeding line story when I saw the dog
run a lovely double-suspension.)

I'm not sure why/if people breed this cross intentionally, since it's not a
cross that's particularly fast or protective (not predictably so, anyway).
I did hear a story a few years (maybe from Cynthia) about a vet in the
Atlanta (?) area who thought that cross was the "perfect breed" and was
breeding them for sale as pets, and that these crosses kept showing up in
area pounds.

Subject: CHAT: need name suggestions - somewhat off topic

Hey gang, I could use a little help, and with all the wonderful knowledge
and wide variety of folks subscribed to this list, I thought I'd give
ya'll a crack at it. Here's my dilemma: I've got a pair of foster
basenjis coming next week, a male and a female, both 1&1/2 yr-old, both
tricolor (black/white/brown). They don't have names at this point --
retrieved from an alcoholic backyard breeder/puppymill situation. I'm
trying to come up with "couples" names, leaning toward something along
the "first couples" lines, like Adam and Eve, George and Martha, etc. or
maybe something from literature, history, Hollywood couples (real life or
movie characters), or popular tv. Here's the others I've thought of so
far: Romeo and Juliet; Hansel and Gretel; Jack and Jill; Frasier and
Lillith; Will and Grace; Lucy and Ricky; Scarlett and Rhett; Dick and
Jane ... you get the idea. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks!

Subject: MEDICAL: POISONING

Thought I'd share this bit of information I found on the Web today and
posted for my Whippet group:

ASPCA National Poison Control Center For Animals
800-548-2423
www.napcc.aspca.org

There is a $45 consultation fee, which goes to support The ASPCA.

I called, and spoke to a kind and sympathetic vet, explaining that I just
wanted to verify the phone number.
She agreed that it was a good idea to alert the media, and also told me that
the 'N" in napcc will be dropped
off the web address in the near future.

Have a safe and happy long weekend.....

I know what you mean! It's really interesting, but with all the
home visits and attempts at thorough screening we did with GFN,
the fewest returns we have had seem to be (in the absence of
researching our records) from the people who adopted at the time
the Idaho track was shutting down -- when we were getting 15 dogs
every 2 weeks and didn't have time to do home visits.

Go figure!

Just to let everyone know - especially all those that answered me privately
on AOL-
my last Grey list was received on 5/21/01 at 0252AM -This was after 4 days
of
nothing. I have not had any other posts delivered. I spoke with AOL today
-was transfered to the "research" division and for all that need it their
direct number is 800-307-7969. They take a detailed report but offer no
immediate solution. If the AOL users are now getting the list, let me know
because I'm not. I actually had to go buy a book today and I'll just read
that until I can get the list - and it's NOT a greyhound book :( I hope
I'm not missing too much !!
