Subject: debate: regap adoption

I was horrified when surfing the new REGAP site. How can an adoption
group voice such a negative
opinion of track related adoption groups? I find the comments you made on
your web site about
neutral adoption groups to be a disgrace. How can you attack other adoption
groups?

It is my understanding that adoption groups are all working towards the
same goal, why are you degrading
the work that these volunteers do? What gives you the right to have all
these negative comments towards
other groups on your web site? These volunteers are doing God's work and
they deserve respect. I have to
say your adoption website lacks professionalism and I would never adopt from
a REGAP group.

There are many folks who are neutral and will someday decide which side
of the fence they will fall on.
They will learn by keeping an open mind and actively learning that there are
good and bad in all aspects of
life. An adoption website should be professional with the main focus on
adoption, not attacking other groups!

Well, you just never know where you're going to see pictures of yourself! I
was busy transferring all my bookmarked web sites from the old computer to
the new computer this evening and what did I find?

http://www.qtm.net/~sburkhard/glggphot.htm

There I am, all the way at the bottom of the page, from the 1999 GLGG, a
pile of tired dogs. I'm the one on the left (built like a mastiff) and my
friend KK (build like a saluki) and the 7 dogs we had at the time. Kitty &
Paulette, greyhounds, Juby, Parker, Bagel & India, the whippets, and
Princess Phoebe, the whippet/saluki mix. It's a really cute picture, you
really can't tell where one dog ends and another one begins.

A whippet person recently told me that once you get more than three dogs,
you either build a kennel, or you get used to living in a kennel. I laughed
at the statement at the time, but upon reflection - I HAVE gotten used to
living in a kennel. I have crates in the car, crates in the living room,
crates in the dining room, crates in the bedroom, crates in the guest room
and even a crate in the kitchen! EEEEKS.

Oops, excuse me - I've got to go clean up after the puppy!

One year ago on this very day, I was shouting out loud, jumping for
joy,=20
doing cartwheels - well, maybe just cartwheels in my mind, but you get
the=20
idea. I was celebrating Corby=E2=80=99s first anniversary with us - an
anni=
versary=20
that I had never dreamed would be a reality.
A brief recap: we adopted Corby, just shy of his 12th birthday, after
he=20
was found abandoned in The Bronx. He had managed to survive on the
streets=20
for a while, until he walked up to a man who was horrified at his
condition=20
and took him to a kill shelter in The Bronx. Corby was emaciated and his=20
eyes were swollen shut because of dental infections. His legs were
shaking=20
with severe arthritis, but my Corby had a lion=E2=80=99s heart - his tail
ne=
ver=20
stopped wagging despite all that he had been through. Greyhound Rescue=20
Society in NY was contacted about Corby, so they picked him up and tended
to=
=20
all of his needs. He was expected to live a few months at the most, so
we=20
adopted him so that he would have a place to die. Instead, he found a
place=
=20
to live.
This year, I can=E2=80=99t shout out loud or jump for joy or do
cartwheels=
in my=20
mind. I just have to thank God for allowing me another year with this=20
amazing boy. My brindly buddy will be 14 years old in five weeks and
today=20
is the second of two anniversaries that I never expected to see. I look
at=20
his shockingly white face as he sleeps on his favorite couch and I wonder
ho=
w=20
I could have ever been really happy without him. I look into his mahogany=20
eyes and I get lost in them every time. I wonder how I will ever be
happy=20
again when he does need to leave.
Corby is here because of his amazing will to live. Closing in on 14
years=
=20
old, Corby doesn=E2=80=99t just live life, he celebrates it. If all
humans=20=
would=20
take lessons from Corby, we would live in an incredibly happy world.
People say that Corby found his angel when I adopted him, but the truth
is=
=20
that I found my angel on May 23, 1999. He holds my heart in his paw, and
I=
=20
can=E2=80=99t think of a better place for my heart to be.

Happy anniversary, Corby! I love you more than words can possibly
expres=
s.

Greyhound", the other is of a reclining greyhound with his paw over his ear,
"Don't bug me I'm having a bad day". Also featured is a 5 pound greyhound

Several weeks ago someone posted a note about a Bayer program that
supplies free or discounted Advantage to shelters and rescue groups. I
emailed her for info but never heard back. Now I'm playing the phone game
with both Bayer and Merial (makers of Frontline) and not getting very far.

Does anyone have info on any programs of this type? We use Frontline at
our kennel, but we'll take just about anything we can get for free. :-)

i have a question and am hoping that someone has an
answer. i have two boys (rebel is 6 and chaz is 4)
both of whom were rescued off the caliente track in
mexico. i've had both of them since shortly before
they turned two years old. rebel is extremely social
both with people and other dogs. chaz is quite shy
with people although he does have his favorites and
gets along great with all other dogs. rebel for some
reason has a very negative reaction to german shepherd
dogs - always, sometimes even german shepherd mixes if
they look like shepherds. he pulls on his leash, he
barks, he gets really excited. as well as i know him,
i still haven't figured out if it's a negative or a
positive excitement but i'm sure not gonna let go of
that leash to find out. has anyone ever seen this
before? does anyone have any suggestions?

Mary Ann S. wrote: "...I'd prefer to adopt from a track. I want to be the
first real home in my dog's life, his or her first non-track owner. I don't
want to separate a dog from his/her foster home."

IMHO, a dog responsibly adopted to a good home, and matched properly, is a
good thing - no matter whether the adoption is through a group, a private
individual, or direct from the track. But I wanted to respond to Mary Ann's
rationale for going direct.

Along with the idea of being a dog's first non-track owner also comes the
full range of house training and acclimation to a non-track routine. Most
groups or more experienced foster homes -as well as responsible track
adoption kennels - would be able to identify and correct potential
behavior/adjustment problems sooner and more effectively than less
experienced adoptors (though I don't know where Mary Ann would rank on this
scale). And to my knowledge, moving foster dogs to their permanent homes is
generally not a traumatic experience for the dogs (though the foster parents
do report pangs, tears, and general separation anxiety :-).

Limiting oneself to adopting only from a track can also rule out the
possibility of bringing home a lovely senior, or a wonderful bounce-back
just waiting for the right home...

Subject: Chat: Ebro Race Track

Hubby and I just got back from a brief, but fun vacation in Panama City
Beach, FL. Condo on the beach, ocean (gulf) at our backdoor. Ah, what a
life.

We went to the Ebro Race Track one night. I'm a lot better at picking
greyhounds as pets than I am as racers. I lost all my money. Hubby won 3
races. He broke even. I tried everything I could think of to pick the
winners. I read their previous times and races. I studied the position
they
started in and how they finished. I read the comments. I picked the cute
names. I even started picking the dogs from the kennels with the most wins
at that track. Nuttin'. I guess I'm just meant to be an adoptive owner and
not a gambler.

Meet some folks from Buffalo, NY while there. They were there to pick up
some dogs heading into retirement. Twenty-two hour drive - oy. doG bless
them though :)

Bought a few of the adoption t-shirts they had for sale in the gift shop.
Very nice shirt. Very colorful. I belive Friends of Greyhounds (Greyhound
Friends) was the sponsor? Don't have the shirt in front of me, but there was
also an 800 number listed under the name. So if you are a member, please
know I wore your shirt proudly around the track :)

We got there early and was able to watch some dogs schooling.
Three rounds ran (don't think that's the correct phrase, but you know what I
mean). In each group, there was at least 1-2 dogs that did not want to walk
on lead out to the box. Very anxious about it. One boy was foaming at the
mouth and they removed his muzzle for his "race". Of course, he came in
dead-last. He just wasn't in the mood or motivated. In fact, I don't think
he even made it to the end where the bunny stops.

Then there was another gal who sadly had a seizure after her run. That was
very scary, but she was well tended to by her trainers and others. Once the
seizure was over, she was up and wagging her tail, although she was still a
bit shaky on her legs. Her trainer ended up carrying her to the truck. I
can't see her having a career in racing, but then, I really don't know how
it
works and if she experiences seizures regularly, or if this was a
coincidence. I don't know anything other than what my heart tells me.

One of the winners in one of the official races actually grabbed hold of the
bunny at the end and it took four people to get the bunny away from him. By
gawd, he won that race and he wanted his prize! I was impressed by the way
the track officials were there to supervise the removal of the bunny from
the
mouth of the dog.
He was very proud of himself too (the dog, that is). He was the number 5
dog
and came in with the number 6 dog. Their odds were 90 to 1. Of course, I
didn't pick them. :)

I think I'll stick to betting on The Roo Crew as they run in the backyard.
