Hello Everyone: Just a reminder that Make Peace With Animals will
be
present at the Crystal Street Block Party in East Stroudsburg, Pa. on
Saturday, May 26th from 12 Noon until 8 PM.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate for all of the festivities.
East
Stroudsburg, Pa. is located 2 miles from the New Jersey State line near the
Delaware Water Gap. To find us take Route 80, take exit 51 (coming from
east or west you will take exit 51) At stop sign of exit ramp make a right
hand turn. Go to the second light (on your right will be East Stroudsburg
University), make a left at the second light. As you cross a little steel
bridge get ready to make a right turn immediately over the bridge. That
will be Crystal Street. You will be able to see the party from there and
assistance with further directions and parking will be provided by
community volunteers and local law enforcement.
Please come and visit, bring your hounds and your people. Lots of
fun
things for two legged kids, music, food, etc., etc.

Funny Jeff should write about this tonight.

This morning I'm standing in the kitchen and I hear slurping. Not
unusual...there are two water bowls there. I turn to see who was drinking,
now coughing, and it's one of my foster girls...drinking out of the bucket
of Spic and Span water! She only had a few slurps, but I dial the vet
anyhow. He's at lunch and the woman suggests I call Poison Control. I did.
Got the nicest young woman. Spic and Span, diluted and in a small amount,
might cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. No need to worry and no
charge!

Hey, all, don't forget that May is Adopt-A-Senior month and there's ONLY
EIGHT DAYS LEFT!!!

Subject: CHAT: Lurchers

I've been lurking on this lurchers chat, but decided to write after
reading the note about the "gentleman" who tried to scam that his dogs
had been stolen.

There is, apparently, a lurcher breeder in my area. My sweet little
Olivia was found running loose. She has no ear tattoos and we think we
know where she came from. We are not sure if she was poorly bred or
bred with another breed. A friend who breeds Jack Russell Terriers said
she thought Olivia looked like she might have some coon hound in her.
The man who is suspected of breeding her keeps his greyhounds outside
and chained to dog houses.

As far as I'm concerned, Olivia is a greyhound. And if she had to be
abused and run away and then fend for herself to get to me--she's here
now and definitely loved.

It has been interesting to learn about lurchers and I've bookmarked the
official site. I think the breeding of greyhounds with other dogs is
probably more common than we've realized.

Sir Toby--"I'm adjusting to this life of luxury quite well, thank you."

Subject: Re: HELP: Morgan lost in Needles

Still no sign of Morgan. The heat is hellish in Needles right now.
The predicted high tomorrow is 114 degrees. I'm hoping the reason no
one has reported seeing him is that he is hiding in the shade during
the day, and only venturing out at night. It's the only way he could
survive.

So many people have pitched in to help! We've covered the
newspapers, radio, pet stores and vets. City Hall and the Chamber of
Commerce are involved. Our phone calls are even beginning to cross
each other, as one volunteer reports that some of the people she
called already had heard about Morgan. Since we're coming up on
Memorial Day Weekend, and Needles is a vacation destination (though I
can NOT imagine why), flyers have been sent to the rest stops and gas
stations on the major highways going into town. Maybe some
vacationer will see the signs, and remember them if he or she
encounters Morgan. Keep thinking good thoughts, and if anyone has
any other suggestions, please let me know.

Of course, it is unfair to generalize from one "bad" track adoption kennel
to all track adoption kennels. Both of my greys came from a track adoption
kennel. I have seen these folks "rescue" many dogs, including several dogs
they did not originally adopt outfrom bad situations. In fact, sometimes
these rescues have not even been greyhounds. Just one example of "goodness"
from a track adoption kennel.

Hey, everyone

Last night Bojack tried to climb a tree after a squirrel and broke his toe
- "index" toe, right front.

This one is a much worse break than the one he had in January. It is a
compound fracture and involves a joint.

So ............ he is having it amputated this morning.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers today.

Thanks &

Subject: Chat: Rooms in Lewes for Reach the Beach

Hi, folks.

I just got off the phone with a very nice man, Glenn, who takes reservations
at the Sleep Inn, a hotel in Lewes, Delaware. He has 8 rooms available for
this year's Reach the Beach weekend on the first floor (they'll only take
dogs on the first floor.

PHONE NUMBER: 302/645-6464.

Rate is $89 per night + $10 per dog per night. PLEASE indicate that you have
dogs so they can flag the rooms. I'm told Lewes is about a 10 minute (?)
ride from Dewey (it's north of Rehoboth and suppose to be a lovely little
town). At least three greyhound families are already booked there.

This hotel originally was only going to take a few families - now they've
opened up the entire first floor.

Now, for any of you still reading ... the reservation clerk, Glenn, is very
interested in possibly adopting a greyhound, himself. I'm a placement rep
for GPA/MD and am wondering if there is a group closer to (or in) Delaware
that could work with him. If so, let me know.

Thanks.

Subject: CHAT: greyhound x coonhound

What a bizarre coincidence -- after I read about greyhound and coonhound
mixes today, my husband came home from work and told me he saw a dog
today in Ladd, IL (near Lasalle-Peru) that looked like a greyhound mixed
with Jedd Clampett's dog -- a coonhound! He said one of his customers
that knows we have whippets told him there was a whippet that was kept
outside all winter, so Eddie went by the address his customer gave him to
see what was up. Eddie said it wasn't a whippet, but a greyhound with
long floppy ears that looked like "Duke."

I have the exact same thing happening with my Duke (age 12 1/2) as a result
of his spinal problems. He has no idea it is happening and appears to be
quit mortified when it does. He ears go down and he practically cowers.
And
there have been times that I have found the "poop" in his bed, so it is also
happening while he is sleeping.

I am doing the exact same thing as Kathy with Duke around his feeding and
making sure he makes frequent trips outdoors before bed time. That seems to
be working very well. I just have to be more conscious that he needs help
going outside more frequently than the others. And also like Kathy says...
ya just gotta love 'em and know they can't help it.

Greetings,
I feel a little qualified to weigh in on this. Two of our three Greys came
from a group & one from the track. In my opinion Greys adjust very well to
situations. The 'group' dogs from Ohio Friends had been fostered so there
was only adaptations to new surroundings. The track dog from Wheeling GPA
wasn't fostered so we had to teach him about windows etc. But he (tucker)
caught on to the routine very quickly. The biggest burden we had with tucker
was hauling his 80lbs a$$ up the stairs. But he got the hang of that in a
few weeks!

I have someone in Newnan, Georgia, who just adopted a grey from the GAP
group here at the track in Jacksonville, Florida. ( don't know why that
far ).

Anyway, they are interested in another, and possibly a mature/ senior type
but playful? The one they just got was straight thru the kennel Adoptions
off the track. He is young about 2. I have plenty here in my area but would
like to get them closer to a group for support, as they are new to greys.
