Subject: Chat: dogs kept outside

I'm sorry, I hate to think I'm going to start any kind of warring debate but
I don't think I want to put this under debate, YET!

Many comments have been made to the list regarding dogs left outside all the
time and I have to comment on this. Without knowing that household and dog
please don't assume the dog is being abused by being left outside alot.

Some dogs hate being left alone inside a crate or building and they are calm
if left outside as compared to left inside. I have experienced this in one
of our foster dogs. He would totally ruin a house if left alone inside for
even a minute but was o.k. outside. So the best thing for the dog was to
leave him outside when we went to work or anywhere. Yes, we tied him, it
was safer than risking him escaping if someone opened our gate or he decided
to become a jumper. We tied him using the sled dog tie-out method which
allows the dog movement without risk of being tangled. We made sure he had
plenty of shelter from both cold and heat and we made sure he had plenty of
water and food. We obviously couldn't be home 24/7 with the dog, so this
was an alternative to making him suffer in the crate or house.

If I have to choose between, crating my dog for 8 or more hours when I have
to work or leaving them outside where they have room to walk around, go
potty, enjoy the fresh air, etc. Guess what?... I think outside is better,
YES even in winter (ooooh, I'm gonna get slaughtered for coming out of the
closet on that one!) As long as I'm sure the dogs are safe and comfortable
(whatever the weather) I think they are better off outside than cooped up in
the house or in a crate.

For further information, up here in northern Canada many rural people keep a
pack of coyote hunting greyhounds. They live outside 365 days a year in all
weather. They are all tied to their dog houses unless they are out hunting.
I DON'T AGREE WITH IT BUT IT HAPPENS. The track where our dogs come from
also leaves the dogs outside all year. My point is; as much as we love to
baby our greyhounds they are much tougher than we give them credit for and
can and do survive if left outside. Some dogs even prefer it, lounging
around in the sun or fresh air. They are, after all.....gasp, dogs (but
don't tell my sissy, bedhogs that, they think they are royalty.)

does the cat ever do anything to the dog? Ours will
smack the dog occasoinally, just because he walked near
him. When the dog gets tired of it, he growls, barks
and/or chases the catdown the hallway.

HI

Please please please...remember this is a greyhound list. It is not a list
for arranging CUR rides for any other breed. It is not a list for
discussing your cat's medical condition.

I hate to be a hard ass, but list volume is high, I'm dealing will tons of
AOL fall out, and it is just too time consuming to focus on anything but
Greyhounds.

There are other lists for other breeds and species. I am happy to direct
anybody to a more appropriate resource.

Thanks for your understanding.

Don't assume that every adoption group has as many foster homes as
dogs. We kennel all of our dogs when we first get them. Once they
have been spayed or neutered, and had all their shots, as many as
possible are placed into the foster homes we've got. But right now
all of our foster homes have cats, so any dog not cat-safe stays at
the kennel, and their adoptor is their first home.

You folks better watch what you say about Regap. Shortly after joining
this list in '96, I made some comments on the list about the local Regap
person, and I was quickly threatened with a lawsuit.

Hello All,

Oh boy where do I start. Last Tuesday my Griffin had to be rushed to the ER
vet with a high fever. It all started with a nick on his leg that looked
like absolutely nothing. A few weeks went by and he was absolutely fine,
then WHAM. It was infected and he got a fever. This happened so suddenly
it
is frightening.

Last week was hell on me but mostly on my sweet boy who had a will to live.
I'm going to try and shorten this a bit. He had all the signs of a TBD
(autoimmune) and the ER doc started him on Doxycycline among others. His
erhlychia came back negative and Babesia hadn't come in yet the doc stopped
the Doxy, without my knowledge, after two days. He looked absolutely
horrible with edema in all four legs and in his chin and neck where they
were
drawing blood. He was also hemoraghing under the skin in different spots
and
his infected leg was deep purple and ugly. For the first two days he
wouldn't
move or eat. I took my Aiko in to see him and that was a huge help in his
recovery and the fact I asked my reg vet to step in. With the help and
persistence of him and Suzanne Stack, Griffin is on his way back. Thank doG
I got him out of the ER.

His blood counts were so dangerously low but I could see in his eyes he was
fighting and wanted to live. He'd get up to walk and pee to everyones
surprise and fought. The ER doc told me twice I should think about letting
him go, but I knew differently.

Just 1 day after leaving the ER and being in the care of my regular vet
Griffin looked like a new dog. He is also coming HOME at nights. Edema
gone,
spunkiness back, eating, and fighting to pull thru this. He's lived up to
his name - Griffin. The Griffin is a mythicalogical creature with the head
of an eagle (spirit), body of a lion (heart & strength) and the tail of a
serpent. I and others admire this dogs will to live.

Needless to say my bills are astronomical. I am offering my pet portraits
at
a discounted price in hopes to help me with the bills. If anyone would be
interested please contact me at BigCats11@aol.com. My sizes start at 5" X
7"
thru 18" X 24". The prices include the frame and your choice of wood for
that frame. I guarantee all my work. You can see samples at
www.crittergallery.com.

Also any groups out there who are having picnics and events everything on my
site is sold in wholesale so you can make a nice profit. Please take a look
at let me know if you may be interested in anything.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Jen

Karen Jax said: How can an adoption
group voice such a negative opinion of track related adoption groups?

Lenka said: For those of you who are being misinformed by someone who did
not thoroughly read the article by Meloni Nardone, the scenario given
pertained to a fabricated adoption group for the sake of providing an
example, not specifically a track related adoption group as mistakenly
communicated by Ms. Jax.

The point of the article is taking a neutral position, not insulting
adoption groups, track based or not.

For anyone who would like to read this essay for themselves, please do. It
is meant to be thought provoking and stir debate, so long as folks read it
properly:

What part of the country are you in? there is probably a
group in your area.

Each dog has his/her own personality. Basically, you can
figure out what you are looking for and a good org can
tell you what they have to fit that.

They are 45mph couch potatoes! They get a couple of 15
minute bursts of energy each day. the rest of the time
they just layaround.

Hi,

We had this problem with Tex... he was the same age as your Lily. He had
some severe rear-end weakness going on and ended up on Pred. to help for a
while. But still there were times when he was just standing there and it
would start to come.

But I have other elder girls and boys. And it could also be senility
setting in. We have just started one of our hounds on a medication for it
to see if it helps any.
