Greyhound-List FAQs

Some questions that we're frequently asked (FAQs), and their answers can be found here:

HOW TO USE THEM

This list is a TOPIC based list. In order to get your mail read by the maximum amount of list members you need to insert a topic keyword into the subject line of each post you send to the list.

The topic keyword MUST come first in the subject line, followed by a colon and then the rest of the subject. For instance:

MEDICAL: My Greyhound is Sick

SPECIAL: Greyhound needs a home in New York

If you are unsure as to what topic is best, you can use more than one topic in your subject line. Simply separate the topics by commas and then place a colon between the last topic keyword and the rest of
the subject. For instance:

MEDICAL,DOGCARE: How to get rid of worms?

SPECIAL,CHAT: GUR run

HOW TO RECEIVE SPECIFIC TOPICS

Tired of reading all of those CHAT posts? Sick of the DEBATE post? Have I got a deal for you.........

For those of you who wish to take advantage of the TOPICS, and want to set your account to receive only the Greyhound-l mail with certain topics in their subject line, please read on........

Topics allow people to restrict the incoming list mail based on the subject line. In order to take advantage of this option, you MUST be getting list mail as individual messages.

To set yourself to MAIL (as opposed to digest), send mail to:

LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM

In the text say:

SET GREYHOUND-L MAIL

Once this is in effect you can then set the topics you wish to receive.

Explanation: right now each of you is set to ALL, which means you are receiving all messages no matter the topic.

Send these "set" commands in to:

LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM

The two most common settings for this option are usually:

SET GREYHOUND-L TOPICS: ALL -CHAT

This means, send you all of the topics EXCEPT for those labeled as CHAT.
...or...

SET GREYHOUND-L TOPICS: ALL -CHAT -OTHER

This means, send you all of the topics EXCEPT for those labeled CHAT, or those with no topic keyword listed in the subject line at all.

For more information, look at the discussion of topics below.  The above two options work for most people, though.

You can list an absolute set of topics to receive, or add and subtract from the current set that you do get.

SET GREYHOUND-L TOPICS: ALL

Means that you will get all messages sent to the list, including unlabelled ones. This is the default for new subscribers.

SET GREYHOUND-L TOPICS: ALL -CHAT

Means that you will get all list mail except those marked CHAT.

SET GREYHOUND-L TOPICS: ADMIN MEDICAL TRAINING

Means that you will only recieve mail with any of these three labels present in the subject line.

SET GREYHOUND-L TOPICS: ALL -OTHER

Means that you will only get mail that has been labelled with a topic keyword.

SET GREYHOUND-L TOPICS: +SPECIAL

Means that you are adding the topic SPECIAL to whatever your current topic setting is.

AOL AND BLACK DIGESTS

Occasionally, people will accidentally send a post to the list that has an HTML attachment in it. If this happens, folks with AOL and a few other ISPs will notice that when they open their mail or digests the screen will be black or red. Here are two workarounds for this problem:

Here are two ideas to get around the dark screen problems:

HTML CODING

For whatever reason, most new mail systems set their default Send to be accompanied by an HTML attachment. That means, unless you find and turn this HTML OFF, you will be sending people duplicates of your posts and the duplicate will be coded up like a Web Page.

This might be fine for private email, but wreaks havoc for the list server.

If you are a new list member or are posting for the first time, PLEASE PLEASE (I beg of you) check the Config or Options area of your mailer (typically found in the top menu area in the window you read your mail) and turn OFF the HTML option.

HTML turned ON will cause an exact duplicate of your post to be attached to the end of that same post, but it will have HTML (web page) code around the words. An example of what HTML code looks like:

--WebTV-Mail-1862840442-105
Content-Description: signature
Content-Disposition: Inline
Content-Type: Text/HTML; Charset=US-ASCII
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit

<html>
<body bgcolor=black text=red>
<embed src=

loop=true>
<body background=

you. This is the principle difference between a dog and a man." - Mark
Twain

AOL

  • From what I can find, AOL email doesn't have any real "no HTML" setting per say. What they do have is "Email Extras"... allows you to add fancy fonts or images or background to your email... it uses HTML to do it!
  • The other possibility is :
Mail Center | Mail Preferences | uncheck "Show addresses as hyperlinks"

Information Wanted for the Following E-mail Programs

ADVERTISING RESTRICTIONS

Commercial advertisements of any kind are NOT to appear on this list. Rescue dog placement and fundraisers by rescue organizations are not considered advertising, but such messages should be kept as brief as possible -- a screenful (approximately 50 lines) is more than enough. Since Greyhound items are hard to find, we will also allow advertising of catalogues/web pages/specific items **IF** the proceeds (or a portion thereof) go to a Greyhound rescue group. These ads will only be permitted as part of a subscribers signature block and should not be longer than four lines. An example:

John Smith
For a brochure of the great Greyhound collars I make, please email me privately !!
jsmith@email.address

Remember though, this list is primarily for interaction, and anyone posting
"ads only", even within the restrictions, may be asked to leave the list.
